Customer Satisfaction:
Whether you're selling direct to the public
or into another industry, environmental concerns have never been so important. In a recent poll of Purchasing Agents, 100%
of them agreed that if all else was equal (pricing, quality, delivery, etc.) They would choose a vendor with an EMS program in
place.
Many purchasing departments are already imposing environmental guidelines
for their vendors. You may consider yourself a small supplier, but you must consider that all EMS programs take downline vendors
into account and this could have a negative result for your current business relationship.
Insurance:
Insurance companies across the country are starting realize the excessive costs associated with environmental
clean-up and have been protecting themselves with special insurance riders which has a direct cost impact on you.
In most cases, a certified EMS can protect businesses from additional environmental insurance rate hikes. ( speak with your agent about what an EMS can do for your business)
Finance:
It does not matter whether you are a one man operation or a multi-national corporation, you will always have
to work with outside contributors for funding of your business. It may be the local bank, relative or thousands of shareholders
who have a direct stake in the business. You can be certain that regardless of their investment category, they will feel much
better knowing that their support is with a company that takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously.
Sales
& Marketing:
A documented EMS is your "ace in the hole"
In a world of same old this and same old that, purchasing agents and the general public around the country are looking
for what sets you apart from all the others offering the same old thing. Note the information about the Poll of Purchasing
agents in the first heading on this page. 100% are looking for that vendor with a solid EMS program.
A certified EMS not only sets you apart from your competition it also provides a means for opening new opportunities
in the future. Take Wal-Mart for example, if you do not have an EMS program in place don't even bother trying to move
your product through their stores. They require all vendors to have an environmental management system in place. This currently
applies to tier one vendors, but soon could include all vendors supplying tier one vendors. This means if one of your customers
is supplying Wal-Mart, they could soon be required to buy from only companies with an EMS program.
Government:
The EPA and OSHA are now working together to spot check companies in violation of worker safety and environmental
regulations. Avoid the costly embarrassment by having a documented EMS that details your compliance above and beyond the federal
requirements.
You can also boost your company exposure by being eligible
to participate in the very exclusive and prestigous "National Environmental Performance Track" program. The program
provides many additional benefits to its members, but one must have an established EMS program to apply.
Productivity:
Because the whole basis of
an EMS program is to find and address efficiency through reduction and conservation of materials and energy, the lasting result
is cost savings. Every business is different in some way and the results will vary from one business to the next, but using
the methods presented in the GreenScene EMS you'll learn the skills needed to pinpoint potential cost reductions.
International Trade:
If your business is currently
working with overseas clients then you are already aware of stringent environmental regulations imposed in many countries.
The EU, China, India,Canada and many others are already imposing regulations that exceed those here in the United States.
This is changing rapidly because the US understands that in order for fair trade to continue we must stay on top of these
new environmental laws or risk billions in trade revenue.
Waste Management:
This is a simple, just as you'll
find cost savings through reduction and conservation that will increase the bottom line, it will also generate reduction and
conservation in waste disposal. By reducing and conserving in each of the processes leading up to waste, your byproduct is
less waste, thus eliminating costs related to compliance, waste hauling, storage and disposal.
